The Governing Bodies of Coleg Llysfasi and Deeside College have agreed to propose to the Welsh Assembly Government that the two colleges should merge. The consultation document sets out the context, rationale and anticipated benefits of the proposed merger.
We are very excited about the future of the merged College for the benefit of education, training and skills development in North East Wales and in particular, the future of Land Based provision within the economy of Wales. Under our proposals the responsibility for learners, quality, funding and operations associated with all provision, including Further Education and Work-based Learning activities, will transfer to Deeside College. The creation of a more extensive learning infrastructure will enable Coleg Llysfasi to secure Land-based training opportunities in Denbighshire and beyond and to work with the Local Education Authorities to play a key role in partnership-led policy for effective co-operation, especially for the 14-19 age group. Opportunities for employers will be improved, whilst further enhancing learner choices and bilingual provision at Deeside College. The merged College, building on the strengths of the recent merger between Deeside College and the Welsh College of Horticulture, will secure and enhance Land-based provision and strengthen the contribution of the Land-based sector to the economy of Wales.
Both Governing Bodies believe that the proposed merger will provide a more comprehensive, flexible and responsive curriculum offering for the merged College, the potential to improve access and increase choice for a broader range of students at all levels and ages, improve progression routes and enable greater course viability. It is also intended that the resulting merged College will provide an enhanced curriculum offer in a more economical, cost effective and viable way than at present.
The consultation process will provide key internal and external stakeholders with the opportunity to express their views on the proposed merger and potentially shape the future direction of education and training in North East Wales. All stakeholders’ feedback will be considered and used to inform future policy for the merged institution.
